"Dating back to the 1700s, Waxhaw is one of the oldest towns in Union County, taking its name from the Waxhaws (originally called the Wysacky), an Indian tribe that once inhabited the area. When chartered in 1889, Waxhaw established its rightful place as the third oldest town in Union County." Visit Waxhaw website.
Today, the Carolina Thread Trail travels through the middle of downtown Waxhaw using both sidewalks and greenway plus an over street bridge. "No trip to Waxhaw is complete without a stroll across the historic overhead foot bridge. Once used by automobiles, the bridge is now designated for pedestrian traffic only. Adults and children alike enjoy standing on the bridge while one of Waxhaw's many trains passes beneath their feet. The bridge is flanked on both sides by large shade trees and benches and is located in the heart of historic downtown Waxhaw." Visit Waxhaw website.
