The entire length of Toby Creek Greenway - Ruth G. Shaw Trail is paved and roughly 10-feet wide, allowing plenty of room for walkers, runners, cyclists, and others. The addition of Toby Creek Greenway to the Clarks-Mallard Greenway system provides a total of 8.5 miles of greenway connectivity.
This trail was named for Ruth G. Shaw, who has contributed to our community, particularly through her leadership with the Carolina Thread Trail and as Director of the Board of Trustees for UNC Charlotte. This trail recognizes Ruth G. Shaw's life-long commitment to service and learning and celebrates her many contributions to further higher education, environmental conservation, and economic development in the Charlotte area. The Thread Trail is pleased to honor Ruth for her service as the founding Governing Board Chair of the Carolina Thread Trail and for her many contributions to higher education, environmental protection, and economic development.
The Ruth G. Shaw Trail passes through a peaceful part of the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and offers views of several buildings, fields, and athletic facilities. A stream flows alongside this quiet trail. During the summer months, visitors are treated to sightings of butterflies and the canopy of tulip poplars, sycamores, and box elder trees provides refreshing shade.
